Pedro Paramo

Pedro Páramo

How to explain "Pedro Páramo" to people who've never heard of it? I really have no idea, but i'll give it a try.

First of all, anybody who wishes to read this novel must know it has an incredibly messed up sequence... for real, if you don't consider yourself a good reader, I wouldn't recommend this book for you. You'd be better off reading something simpler, like a book about quantum physics or one which explains why do kids love the taste of cinnamon crunch.

Another thing you should keep in mind is that this was originally written in spanish, and meant for people who know the language enough to understand several mexican expressions.

"I came to Comala...". That's how the book starts... or ends... I dunno. But still, even if the order in which this sequences happen is chaotic, I must admit that it has been beautifully written, giving out just the necessary details to maintain the reader on board (instead of giving too many or too few), making sure we understand the precise state of the town of "Comala" depending on the year, and making us think about subjects we had never thought about before.

Even though this marvelous story is very complex at various moments, it never sacrifices the simplicity it uses to tell it.

What about the characters? Easy, they are as eccentric as they come. From the succesful, cruel, and powerful "Pedro Páramo" to the naive, poor and humble "Juan Preciado" every character has a rather different view of life, values and motivations that made them who they are.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who's willing to get out of the ordinary read, repeat a chapter several times and make a timeline on the back of the cover (I really did that). This novel is just incredible to anyone who accepts that we just can't understand every single little thing we read, and, sometimes, we should just enjoy the ride.
